Orange County, NC (February 20, 2025) – A devastating series of crashes on Interstate 40 West at the I-85 South connector in Orange County resulted in the death of one person and injuries to several others on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Orange Rural Fire Department, the multi-vehicle pileup involved approximately 53 vehicles across a dozen separate crashes. The State Highway Patrol reported that the chain of collisions began when two initial crashes took place at the same location on I-40 West near Exit 261 (Old N.C. 86) in Hillsborough. The first crash occurred at 3:02 p.m., followed by another at 3:24 p.m., which caused traffic to come to a standstill.

Shortly after, multiple vehicles, including a tractor-trailer, slammed into the stopped traffic. Authorities confirmed that 78-year-old Jerolyn Day Wilson, of Burlington, lost her life when a tractor-trailer struck her vehicle. The driver of the truck, 44-year-old William Crowell Kellam of Spartanburg, South Carolina, was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and exceeding a safe speed for conditions.

Emergency personnel transported six individuals to the hospital for treatment of their injuries. Additionally, ten others were taken to a warming center after being removed from the scene. Reports indicate that at least four tractor-trailers were involved in the crashes, with two of them jackknifing along I-85 where it merges near I-40.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic series of collisions.

The Dangers of Multi-Vehicle Pileups on North Carolina Highways

Major interstates such as I-40 and I-85 are vital transportation routes in North Carolina, but they also present significant dangers during high-traffic periods. Sudden stops, poor visibility, and high speeds often contribute to chain-reaction crashes, particularly when large commercial trucks are involved. Pileups like the one in Orange County can be catastrophic, leading to severe injuries, fatalities, and extensive roadway closures.

When a multi-vehicle crash occurs, emergency response becomes more complex. Victims may find themselves dealing with life-threatening injuries, significant vehicle damage, and the emotional trauma of experiencing such a chaotic event. Medical treatment, rehabilitation, and financial recovery can take months or even years. Those injured in these incidents may struggle with mounting medical bills and lost income, making it essential to explore their legal options.

Seeking legal guidance after a serious crash can help victims understand their rights and ensure they receive the support needed for their recovery. If you or a loved one has been involved in a highway accident, contact Local Accident Reports for information on available resources and assistance.
