Oradell, NJ (February 15, 2025) – A kitchen fire at the CareOne senior rehabilitation and assisted living facility on Kinderkamack Rd resulted in at least one person requiring medical attention early Saturday morning.
According to officials, the fire started shortly after 6:30 a.m., when a kitchen appliance caught fire inside the facility’s cooking area. Firefighters arrived quickly and managed to contain and extinguish the flames in under an hour, preventing further damage.
Fire officials stated that evacuations were not necessary, but some residents and staff were relocated to the first floor as a precaution while others remained sheltered in place. The facility’s fire suppression system and quick response by emergency crews helped minimize the fire’s impact and prevented it from spreading. Several fire departments and medical personnel assisted in containing the blaze and ensuring the safety of the facility’s residents
Authorities confirmed that one individual required medical attention, though the extent of their injuries has not yet been released. Officials are continuing their investigation into the cause of the fire, but no further injuries or significant structural damage were reported.
Our thoughts are with the injured individual, and we wish them a swift recovery.
Fire Safety in Assisted Living Facilities
Assisted living and senior care facilities prioritize fire safety due to the increased risks posed to elderly residents, particularly those with mobility issues or medical conditions. Fires in these settings can be caused by:
- Kitchen-related incidents (appliance malfunctions, grease fires, unattended cooking)
- Electrical malfunctions or overloaded circuits
- Heating equipment failures
- Smoking-related fires
Facilities such as CareOne implement fire safety protocols, including smoke alarms, fire-resistant doors, sprinkler systems, and evacuation plans, to protect their residents. Routine fire drills and staff training also help reduce risk and ensure quick responses in emergencies.
