Onslow County, NC (November 18, 2024) – A tragic crash on Highway 24 East near Hubert claimed the life of one individual and left another injured Sunday afternoon. The incident, which occurred shortly before 3:40 p.m., involved an SUV rear-ending a moped, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
Authorities reported that Angela Perkins, 38, of Jacksonville, was driving an SUV with three children inside, ranging in age from 1 month to 5 years. Perkins, who was driving impaired with a revoked license, collided with the moped, ejecting its occupants.
Eric Kane, 48, who was operating the moped, sustained injuries and was transported to the Naval Medical Center at Camp Lejeune for treatment. Tragically, Darlene Valentine, 50, who was a passenger on the moped, was pronounced dead at the scene despite wearing a DOT-compliant helmet.
The Highway Patrol revealed that Perkins had previous impaired driving offenses and refused a blood test at the scene. Charges have been filed against her as the investigation continues.
Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victims during this difficult time, and we extend our hopes for a full recovery to Eric Kane.
