Omaha, NE (October 1, 2024) – A devastating crash occurred early Friday September 27, in downtown Omaha, resulting in the tragic deaths of four individuals. The incident took place around 1:23 AM when a black 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by 33-year-old Rachel Bickerstaff, collided with a blue 2017 Subaru Outback, driven by 70-year-old Michael Sales from Council Bluffs.
According to the Nebraska State Patrol, Bickerstaff was allegedly driving at speeds between 105 and 116 mph while under the influence, with a blood alcohol content level of 0.216—nearly three times the legal limit. The crash occurred as Bickerstaff’s vehicle rear-ended Sales’ Subaru, causing it to strike a light pole. The force of the collision resulted in Bickerstaff’s Jeep rolling over and catching fire, which subsequently spread to Sales’ vehicle.
Tragically, two of Bickerstaff’s children, aged 11 days and 5 years old, identified as Amilia and Amiliana Bickerstaff, did not survive the crash. Bickerstaff, along with a man and an 18-month-old child, managed to escape the burning vehicle. However, the 18-month-old child later succumbed to injuries sustained in the accident, passing away late Tuesday morning.
Emergency responders transported Bickerstaff, the man, and the 18-month-old child to Nebraska Medical Center for treatment. The situation was described as heart-wrenching, with medical staff noting the haunting nature of the child’s injuries.
Michael Sales, who was returning home from his job at FedEx, did not survive the incident. His family has expressed their grief, describing him as a caring individual who brought joy to those around him. Mindi Sales, a relative, shared heartfelt memories of Michael, highlighting his close relationships with his daughters, Gracelyn and Laura, and the joy they shared while supporting the Huskers together.
The Nebraska State Patrol is continuing its investigation into the crash, and Bickerstaff has been charged with three counts of motor vehicle homicide. This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of impaired and reckless driving.
