Omaha, NE (September 27, 2024) – Early Friday morning, September 27 a tragic two-vehicle accident occurred near Gene Leahy Mall at the intersection of 10th and Douglas Streets, resulting in the loss of three lives, including two children. The Omaha Police Department reported that emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene shortly after 1:20 a.m. to address the devastating crash.
Preliminary investigations revealed that a man driving a 2017 Subaru Outback had just made a left turn from 10th Street onto Douglas Street when his vehicle was rear-ended by a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The force of the collision caused the Jeep to strike a tree and roll over, while the Subaru collided with a light pole. Both vehicles subsequently caught fire and were engulfed in flames.
Tragically, two children were found deceased inside the Jeep, and the driver of the Subaru was also pronounced dead at the scene. In addition, three occupants of the Jeep, including the 33-year-old driver and a 38-year-old passenger, along with a child, sustained injuries and were transported to Nebraska Medicine for treatment. They have since been moved to a specialized burn unit in another state for further care.
The Omaha Police Department is actively investigating the crash, focusing on whether speed and alcohol played a role in the incident. Investigators are currently consulting with the Douglas County Attorney’s Office regarding potential charges against the driver of the Jeep. The eastbound entrance ramp from 10th Street to I-480 was closed for nearly seven hours as authorities worked to clear the scene and conduct their investigation.
