According to the Old Orchard Police Department, first responders were dispatched to the area of the Amtrak station at 11 First Street shortly after 10:50 AM following reports of the collision.
Upon arrival, officers determined that two males had been hit by a freight train traveling north toward Scarborough. One individual was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he was listed in critical condition as of late Wednesday afternoon.
Additionally, two other males were located at the Old Orchard Beach Amtrak Station but were not injured in the incident. A spokesperson for CSX confirmed that the train involved in the accident is owned by the company. In a statement, CSX extended its deepest sympathies to everyone impacted by this tragedy and indicated that they would support local law enforcement as they continue their investigation.
Witnesses reported seeing multiple police cruisers and fire department vehicles at the scene, and police tape was set up near the train tracks close to the Old Orchard Beach Chamber of Commerce. A freight train was stopped on the tracks when news crews arrived.
