Normania Twp, MN (October 22, 2024) – A serious traffic accident occurred on the evening of October 21 at the intersection of HWY 59 and CR 3, resulting in injuries to two individuals. The incident was reported at approximately 9:40 p.m. when a 2016 Chevrolet Impala collided with a 2009 Peterbilt semi-truck.
Preliminary reports indicate that the Chevrolet was traveling eastbound on CR 3 while the semi was heading southbound on HWY 59 when the two vehicles collided. The road conditions were dry at the time of the accident, which may have influenced the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Emergency responders from the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff’s Office, Clarkfield Fire Department, and Granite Falls Ambulance were on the scene to assist. It was noted that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.
The passenger in the Chevrolet, 19-year-old Mason Eric Smith from Ivanhoe, suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to North Memorial Hospital for urgent medical care. He was also not wearing a seatbelt during the incident.
The driver of the semi, 23-year-old Clayton James Lahr from Garfield, was unharmed and did not require medical attention. He was wearing his seatbelt, and the airbag in his vehicle did not deploy during the collision. Alcohol involvement for the drivers of the Chevrolet remains unknown.
