Norfolk, VA (October 23, 2024) – A tragic incident at Marine Hydraulics International (MHI) in Norfolk resulted in the deaths of two shipyard workers on Wednesday morning. Emergency crews responded to the facility located at 1215 Warrington Ave., near the Midtown Tunnel, following a call received at 7:46 a.m. regarding a technical rescue.
Norfolk Police were dispatched to assist Norfolk Fire-Rescue shortly after 8:10 a.m. Upon arrival, emergency responders discovered one man who was pronounced dead at the scene. Another worker, who sustained life-threatening injuries, was transported to a local hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries later that day.
In a statement, MHI expressed their sorrow over the loss, stating, “We are deeply saddened to confirm the passing of two shipyard workers after an incident at MHI Ship Repair’s midtown facility this morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families, as well as with the many impacted workers at our facility. We are committed to supporting them through this difficult time. Safety is our top priority at MHI, and we will work within our own team and with local authorities to investigate the cause of this incident.”
Following the incident, workers on the ship where the accident occurred were sent home for the day while the remainder of the shipyard continued normal operations. One anonymous worker shared his feelings about the incident, stating, “We’re still working, but, you know, I’m still traumatized a little bit. You hear something like that, it’s going to change the rest of your day. It’s not going to make you like, ‘ah man, let me back to work,’ it’s like, nah it’s going to be on my mind. It’s going to make me think about the things I do. Like what kind of environment do I work in? How safe is it, you know?”
The investigation into the incident is ongoing. MHI is cooperating with local authorities to determine the circumstances that led to this tragic event.
Our hearts go out to the families and friends of the deceased workers during this incredibly difficult time.
