Norfolk, NE (October 29, 2024) – A serious accident occurred Monday evening when a vehicle collided with the Women’s Health of Northeast Nebraska building, resulting in injuries to two occupants. The incident took place around 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of 25th Street and Benjamin Avenue.
According to Capt. Michael Bauer of the Norfolk Police Division, the vehicle was traveling northbound on 25th Street when the male driver experienced a medical episode. This unfortunate event caused the vehicle to veer off course and collide with the building located at 2504 W. Benjamin Ave, which is situated northwest of the roundabout at 25th Street and Benjamin Avenue.
Witnesses reported that the vehicle went through the roundabout the wrong way and descended a hill, plowing through small trees and jumping over a pond before striking the south side of the structure. The female passenger attempted to move the unconscious driver’s foot off the accelerator but was unable to do so. Fortunately, both individuals were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.
The force of the collision pushed the wall of a room in the building inward by approximately 8 to 10 inches, although none of the medical equipment inside was affected. At the time of the accident, one doctor was present in the building, working on charts, and she reported hearing the crash but was unharmed.
Both occupants of the vehicle were transported to Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk for medical care. The driver was subsequently flown by helicopter from the Norfolk hospital to another facility, while the female passenger remained at Faith Regional for treatment.
Damage to the building and landscaping is estimated at $30,000, according to authorities. Despite the incident, Women’s Health of Northeast Nebraska remained operational, with a contractor scheduled to assess the damage on Tuesday morning.
Michael Drake, the finance manager at Women’s Health of Northeast Nebraska, expressed concern for the injured individuals, stating, “We are praying and hoping that the driver is going to be OK, and his wife.”
Women’s Health of Northeast Nebraska has been serving Norfolk and the surrounding area since 1992.
