Nipomo, CA (October 14, 2024) – A tragic multi-vehicle accident occurred early Sunday morning on Highway 101, resulting in the death of a man and the arrest of another driver. The California Highway Patrol reported that the incident took place around 2 a.m. near the southbound Highway 166 off-ramp.
Emergency responders received multiple 911 calls regarding a car rollover that was blocking the highway lanes. Approximately ten minutes later, as several motorists were stopped near the crash scene, 20-year-old Dylan Lossing from Orcutt was driving at a high rate of speed toward the area.
According to police, a 2012 Nissan Altima, operated by a 30-year-old man from Santa Maria, was stopped directly behind a black GMC Sierra driven by Leticia Fernandez, 53, of Bakersfield, who had also halted due to the rollover crash. Lossing was unable to slow down in time for the stopped traffic, resulting in a collision with the rear of the Nissan. The impact pushed the Nissan into Fernandez’s GMC Sierra.
Following the initial collision, Lossing’s Altima deflected onto the dirt median and collided with a Chrysler Pacifica driven by 61-year-old Trisha Norris of Santa Maria. The driver of the Nissan was transported to Marian Regional Medical Center for treatment but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries later at the facility.
Lossing, Fernandez, and two other individuals were treated for their injuries at the scene. Following the crash, police arrested Lossing on suspicion of impaired driving. He was booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail and faces several charges, including DUI causing injury, DUI of .08 or above with injury, and manslaughter and gross negligence.
