Newport, NY (October 29, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred on October 28, resulting in one fatality and one person hospitalized. At approximately 4:15 p.m. on October 28, emergency responders were called to Butler Road in Newport following reports of a collision involving a motor vehicle and an Amish buggy.
Preliminary investigations revealed that 36-year-old Andrew Bienkowski of Newport was driving eastbound on Butler Road when his vehicle struck the rear of an Amish buggy, which was also traveling eastbound. The impact of the collision caused the driver of the buggy, 31-year-old Rebecca Swartzentruber, to be ejected from the vehicle. Her one-year-old passenger, Mattie Swartzentruber, was similarly ejected during the crash.
Emergency services quickly arrived at the scene. Mattie Swartzentruber was transported to Wynn Hospital in Utica, where it was reported that her injuries are non-life-threatening. Unfortunately, Rebecca Swartzentruber was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of her injuries.
The accident prompted the closure of Butler Road for several hours as State Police conducted their investigation. The roadway has since been reopened to traffic.
New York State Police were assisted on the scene by the Newport and Schuyler Fire Departments, as well as the Kuyahoora Valley Ambulance Corps.
