Newark, DE (November 7, 2024) – A fatal single-vehicle accident occurred Tuesday night on Salem Church Road in Newark, resulting in the death of one man and leaving another injured. The Delaware State Police are conducting an investigation into the cause of the crash.
According to officials, the incident took place around 9:57 p.m. on November 5, 2024, when a blue 2012 Infiniti G37 was traveling southbound on Salem Church Road, south of Arthurs Drive. For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle veered off the right side of the road, where it traveled approximately 30 feet before striking a culvert and overturning multiple times. The force of the rollover ejected both occupants from the vehicle, which ultimately came to rest in a driveway on the 700 block of Salem Church Road.
The occupants of the Infiniti were identified as a 31-year-old man and a 59-year-old man, both residents of Newark. The 59-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, though his identity is being withheld pending family notification. The 31-year-old man sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital by EMS for treatment. At this time, authorities have not determined which occupant was driving the vehicle.
The roadway was closed for approximately 5.5 hours as investigators examined the scene and cleared debris. Delaware State Police continue to investigate the factors that may have contributed to the crash.
Our condolences are with the family and loved ones of the deceased, and we extend our hopes for the injured man’s recovery.
Rollover Accidents and Ejections in Delaware
Rollover accidents, particularly those involving occupant ejections, are often deadly and highlight the critical importance of seat belt usage and vehicle control. Delaware’s roads, including those in Newark, see a notable number of serious single-vehicle crashes each year, many of which result from factors like driver distraction, excessive speed, or impaired driving. Vehicles like the Infiniti G37 are susceptible to rollover when control is lost, especially if obstacles such as culverts or embankments are encountered.
The Delaware Department of Transportation emphasizes the importance of seat belt usage in preventing occupant ejections during accidents, which can significantly reduce the severity of injuries in rollovers. Single-vehicle accidents are underlined by the need for all occupants to secure themselves with seat belts at all times.
