Newark, DE (October 22, 2024) – A tragic hit-and-run accident occurred on Monday evening, resulting in the death of a bicyclist near Newark. The incident took place on October 21, 2024, at approximately 5:21 p.m., when a 40-year-old man from New Castle was riding his bicycle westbound on the right shoulder of Pulaski Highway (Route 40), just east of Wellington Drive.
According to officials, an unknown vehicle was also traveling westbound on the right shoulder when it struck the bicyclist, causing him to be ejected from his bicycle. Following the collision, the vehicle fled the scene, prompting an immediate response from the Delaware State Police.
Emergency responders transported the injured bicyclist to a local hospital, where he was sadly pronounced deceased. Authorities have withheld his identity pending notification of his family.
The Delaware State Police, along with the Aviation Unit, conducted a thorough search of the area for the suspect vehicle but were unable to locate it. Witnesses described the vehicle as a black SUV, although the exact make and model remain unknown at this time.
The accident led to the closure of the westbound lanes of Pulaski Highway, just east of Wellington Drive, for approximately four and a half hours as the Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit investigated the crash and cleared the roadway.
