New York, NY (February 4, 2025) – A high-speed crash involving a Tesla resulted in one fatality and left another person injured early Tuesday morning on FDR Drive near the 71st Street exit. The impact caused the vehicle to burst into flames, leading to an hours-long road closure and significant traffic delays.
According to officials, the white Tesla was traveling northbound at excessive speeds when it struck a guardrail around 3 a.m. The force of the collision ejected both occupants from the vehicle. The female driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 26-year-old male passenger was transported to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital’s Cornell Burn Unit, where he was stabilized.
Traffic was severely impacted, with northbound lanes closed at 61st Street until just before 8:30 a.m. Southbound lanes, which had been diverted at 96th Street, reopened before 7:30 a.m. Witnesses reported seeing a car speeding past at approximately 120–130 mph before the crash.
Firefighters battled intense flames caused by the Tesla’s lithium-ion battery, which proved difficult to extinguish. Due to the fire risk posed by electric vehicle batteries, crews followed the tow truck transporting the Tesla to the impound lot to prevent potential flare-ups.
Authorities continue to investigate the crash, including whether excessive speed or other factors contributed to the fatal accident.

Electric Vehicle Crashes and Fire Hazards in New York
Electric vehicle crashes present unique dangers due to the risk of lithium-ion battery fires, which burn at extremely high temperatures and can be difficult to control. When high-speed impacts occur, the structural integrity of the battery may be compromised, increasing the potential for intense fires that require specialized firefighting techniques.
New York law allows victims of car accidents caused by excessive speed, reckless driving, or other negligent behaviors to seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages. Investigating the causes of these crashes is crucial to improving road safety and preventing future tragedies.
