New Rochelle, NY (February 24, 2025) – A devastating fire broke out at the Imperial Yacht Club just after midnight on Saturday, engulfing multiple boats in flames and causing significant damage.
According to New Rochelle firefighters, crews arrived to find an intense blaze threatening nearby properties and buildings. Despite freezing temperatures, firefighters worked quickly to contain the fire, bringing it under control after approximately three hours. A fire boat from the Port Washington Fire Department assisted in extinguishing the remaining hot spots.
Two individuals, a mother and child, were found inside a car near the scene and were transported to a local hospital for treatment due to smoke inhalation. Officials believe they had been on one of the burning boats before seeking refuge.
Reports indicate that seven boats were destroyed, including two 40-foot recreational vessels that sank. Additionally, a 100-gallon diesel fuel spill resulted from the incident, prompting an environmental response from the New Rochelle Harbormaster, the US Coast Guard, and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
FDNY Marine 6 was also deployed to assist in the firefighting efforts. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
Our thoughts are with those affected by this devastating fire, and we hope for a swift recovery for those injured.
Boat Fires and Safety in New York
Boat fires, like the one at the Imperial Yacht Club, can cause significant destruction due to the presence of highly flammable materials, fuel sources, and the confined nature of marina spaces. Electrical malfunctions, fuel leaks, or unattended heat sources are often factors in these types of fires.
In New York, marinas and boat owners must adhere to strict fire safety regulations, including proper fuel storage, electrical system maintenance, and the presence of fire suppression equipment. Despite these precautions, fires can still break out unexpectedly, leading to major losses and environmental concerns.
The aftermath of a large-scale marina fire can be overwhelming for victims, with property loss, potential health risks from smoke inhalation, and environmental hazards such as fuel spills. In such cases, seeking assistance from local agencies and understanding insurance claims and legal rights can be crucial for those affected.
