New Orleans, LA (December 4, 2024) – A pedestrian was struck and killed in New Orleans East on the evening of December 3, 2024. The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) reported the incident occurred on Interstate 510 South near the Lake Forrest Boulevard exit at approximately 6:09 p.m.

Officers arrived at the scene to find a man lying in the road, having been hit by a car. The driver of the vehicle involved had stopped nearby and immediately called the police to report striking an “unknown object” in the left lane. New Orleans Emergency Services pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Police stated that neither speed nor impairment appeared to be contributing factors in the crash, and as a result, the driver was not charged with any violations. The identity of the pedestrian has not yet been released, pending an autopsy and family notification by the Orleans Parish Coroner.

This tragic incident highlights the danger of walking near roadways, especially on high-speed lanes such as I-510. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Pedestrian Safety in Louisiana

Pedestrian accidents, particularly on highways or busy streets, are often tragic and preventable. This fatal crash is another reminder of the importance of staying clear of roadways, particularly at night or in low-visibility conditions. While the driver in this case did not face charges, pedestrians are at a significant risk of injury or death when walking on or near fast-moving traffic lanes like those on I-510.

Louisiana law enforcement continues to investigate the crash, and further updates will be provided as more details become available.
