New Meadows, ID (October 17, 2024) – A tragic vehicle collision occurred on Tuesday evening, October 15, north of New Meadows, resulting in the death of an 80-year-old man. The accident took place around 7:45 p.m. on US95 in Adams County.
According to the Idaho State Police (ISP), the incident involved two vehicles. A blue 1978 Datsun 280Z, driven by the 80-year-old man from Riggins, was traveling northbound when he failed to navigate a curve properly. Reports indicate that the driver attempted to brake but lost control, sliding into the path of a red 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 traveling southbound. A 71-year-old man from New Plymouth operated the Dodge.
Despite both drivers wearing seatbelts, the Datsun was not equipped with airbags, contributing to the crash’s severity. The driver of the Datsun tragically succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The driver of the Dodge sustained minor injuries but was able to exit the vehicle.
Emergency responders closed both lanes of US95 for approximately four hours to manage the scene and conduct an investigation. The Idaho State Police continue looking into the accident’s circumstances.
