New Castle, DE (December 30, 2024) – A collision occurred at the intersection of North Dupont Highway and School Lane on Sunday evening following a police pursuit involving a stolen vehicle. The incident unfolded at approximately 4:50 PM when troopers patrolling State Route 1 southbound and Christiana Rd observed a white 2012 Kia Optima with New Jersey registration, occupied by two teenagers.

A computer check revealed that the vehicle had been reported stolen earlier that day to the Carneys Point Police Department in New Jersey. When officers attempted a traffic stop, the Kia fled at a high speed, crossing the front lawn of a residence on Lanford Rd, nearly hitting a pedestrian, and striking a mailbox. The pursuit continued with the Kia committing multiple traffic violations, ultimately culminating in a collision with a Nissan Maxima at the intersection of North Dupont Hwy and School Ln.

Following the crash, the Kia’s 14-year-old operator fled on foot but was apprehended after a brief chase. The passenger, a 16-year-old male, remained in the vehicle and was taken into custody without incident. The operator of the Nissan sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital by EMS for treatment. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
