New Castle County, DE (February 17, 2025) – A serious motor vehicle collision with entrapment occurred Saturday night on Kirkwood Highway at Brighton Ave, leaving a 7-year-old girl critically injured.

Emergency crews, including New Castle County Paramedics, Elsmere Fire Company, and Cranston Heights Fire Company, responded to the crash around 7:03 p.m. Upon arrival, paramedics found the young victim trapped inside a vehicle, where she remained for nearly 20 minutes as rescue crews worked to extricate her.

Officials reported that the child suffered injuries to her extremities and was suspected of having internal injuries. After being freed from the wreckage, paramedics provided on-scene medical treatment before she was transported in critical condition to Nemours A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington. Paramedics accompanied her in an Elsmere Fire Company ambulance.

The Delaware State Police are investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash. Additional details regarding the cause of the collision or other potential injuries have not yet been released.

Our thoughts are with the injured child and her family, and we hope for a full recovery.

Accidents Involving Entrapment in Delaware

Crashes that involve entrapment, such as the one on Kirkwood Highway, can be particularly dangerous, especially when children are involved. Victims who remain trapped inside vehicles for extended periods are at greater risk of serious injuries due to the impact forces and delayed medical intervention.

According to the Delaware Office of Highway Safety (OHS), crashes resulting in entrapment often occur at high speeds or involve multiple vehicles. Firefighters and emergency responders must use specialized rescue techniques to safely remove victims from the wreckage, which can prolong response times and increase injury risks.

For victims and their families, seeking legal guidance can help them understand their rights and explore options for medical coverage, rehabilitation, and financial recovery.
