New Berlin, WI (February 11, 2025) – A New Berlin police officer sustained a broken finger following a crash caused by a wrong-way, intoxicated driver on Mooreland Rd near Cleveland Ave late Friday night. The incident occurred just before 10:30 p.m. on February 9.
According to authorities, the 57-year-old suspect was driving northbound in the southbound lanes of Mooreland Rd when the on-duty officer encountered the vehicle. In an attempt to avoid a direct collision, the officer took evasive action but ended up striking another vehicle. While the officer suffered a broken finger, neither the suspect nor the occupants of the third vehicle reported any injuries.
Waukesha County Sheriff’s deputies quickly arrived on the scene and arrested the suspect for operating while intoxicated (OWI) and causing injury. The officer involved, a five-year veteran of the New Berlin Police Department, is expected to recover from the injury.
The Wisconsin State Patrol has taken over as the lead agency in the investigation, and further details may be released as the case progresses.
Our thoughts are with the injured officer, and we hope for a swift and full recovery.
Drunk Driving and Wrong-Way Crashes in Wisconsin
Wrong-way crashes, particularly those involving intoxicated drivers, are among the most dangerous types of collisions on Wisconsin roadways. The incident on Mooreland Rd in New Berlin highlights the unpredictable and hazardous nature of such events, where even trained professionals like law enforcement officers face significant risks.
Drunk driving remains a leading cause of serious accidents across the state. When impaired drivers enter roadways in the wrong direction, the likelihood of high-impact, head-on collisions increases dramatically. In this case, the officer’s quick decision to take evasive action likely prevented a more catastrophic outcome, though it still resulted in injury and additional property damage.
Wisconsin law imposes strict penalties for operating while intoxicated (OWI), particularly when the offense leads to injuries. A conviction for OWI causing injury can result in hefty fines, license suspension, mandatory alcohol education programs, and potential jail time. The legal process for these cases can be complex, especially when multiple parties and injuries are involved.
For victims of drunk driving accidents, including law enforcement officers, recovery goes beyond physical healing. Emotional trauma, financial strain from medical bills, and legal proceedings can add to the burden. It is crucial for those affected to seek not only medical attention but also legal guidance to ensure their rights are protected.
