Nashville, TN (October 19, 2024) – A tragic incident occurred early Saturday morning in downtown Nashville, resulting in the death of a 58-year-old pedestrian. The accident took place around 1 a.m. on October 19, at the intersection of 12th Avenue South and Broadway.
According to the Metro Nashville Police Department, Michael O’Connell, a resident of New Jersey, was crossing the street when he was struck by a Dodge pickup truck. At the time of the incident, the pedestrian walk light was reportedly illuminated, indicating that O’Connell had the right of way.
The driver of the Dodge pickup, a 36-year-old man from Waverly, was making a left turn onto Broadway from 12th Avenue South during a green light. However, he failed to yield to O’Connell, who was in the crosswalk. Tragically, O’Connell was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses reported that the driver was speeding and “spinning the pickup’s tires” just prior to the collision. Following the incident, the driver initially left the scene but returned shortly afterward. Authorities noted that he did not exhibit any signs of impairment. He was subsequently issued a citation for “failure to yield the right of way,” according to the MNPD.
Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Michael O’Connell during this difficult time.
