Nampa, ID (September 23, 2024) – A police chase on Saturday evening, September 21 resulted in two individuals being hospitalized, an extensive search through a farmer’s field, and the tragic death of a police dog. The incident began shortly before 6 p.m. when Nampa Dispatch received a tip regarding a man on parole allegedly heading to a commercial location to sell drugs.
Patrol officers located a vehicle believed to be occupied by the suspect and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. When the driver, a woman, failed to pull over, officers began pursuing the vehicle. During the chase, the officers attempted a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT Maneuver) to stop the vehicle. However, the suspect vehicle turned and collided with the police vehicle, causing both vehicles to roll off the roadway and into a cornfield.
The driver and Nampa officer Cody Huss were treated for their injuries at a local hospital and later released. The male suspect managed to escape the crash site near Ustick Road and Polara Way, prompting a nearly four-hour search of the surrounding area. This search was supported by the Canyon County Sheriff’s Office, Meridian Police Department, Caldwell Police Department, and Idaho State Police.
Shortly after the search concluded, dispatch received information indicating that the suspect was at a local convenience store. Nampa police officers responded to the location, apprehending the suspect without further incident. The 27-year-old male suspect from Caldwell was arrested on a parole agent’s warrant, which allows for detention without a traditional warrant.
The 33-year-old female driver was arrested on multiple felony charges, including battery of a law enforcement officer, eluding law enforcement, trafficking methamphetamine, and possession of controlled substances. She also faces misdemeanor charges for possessing psilocybin mushrooms. Both individuals were booked into the Canyon County Jail in the early hours of Sunday.
Tragically, during the pursuit, a police K-9 named Riddick lost his life. Riddick, a 3-year-old German shepherd trained in apprehension and drug detection, was transported with a police escort to a Nampa veterinary hospital following the crash.
Our thoughts are with all those affected by this incident, including the families of the individuals involved and the Nampa Police Department as they mourn the loss of K-9 Riddick.
