Nags Head, NC (December 1, 2024) – Two pedestrians were injured Friday evening after being struck by a vehicle while using a designated crosswalk on South Virginia Dare Trail. The incident occurred at approximately 5:38 PM near 7228 South Virginia Dare Trail, according to a press release from the town’s public information officer, Roberta Thuman.

The victims, identified as residents of Sunbury, NC, aged 71 and 69, were airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment. As of Saturday morning, they were expected to survive their injuries, according to the release.

Witness statements, officer analysis, and video evidence confirm that the couple was using the designated crosswalk at the time of the incident. The driver of the vehicle, a 63-year-old woman from Columbia, NC, was cited for failure to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk. Authorities stated that speed and impairment were not factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Roberta Thuman emphasized the importance of safety for both drivers and pedestrians, especially during early evening hours when visibility can be reduced. “The Town of Nags Head urges all drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution and remain vigilant,” she stated.

Our thoughts go to the victims as we hope for their recovery.

Pedestrian Safety in North Carolina

Incidents like this highlight the ongoing challenges of pedestrian safety, even in areas with designated crosswalks. North Carolina law requires drivers to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, and failing to do so can result in serious injuries or fatalities.

Drivers should always approach crosswalks with care, particularly during times of reduced visibility, such as early evening or in poor weather conditions. Similarly, pedestrians are encouraged to use designated crossings and remain alert when navigating busy roadways.

Injuries resulting from pedestrian accidents can have long-lasting effects, including physical recovery and emotional trauma. Victims and their families often face significant medical expenses and legal complexities in the aftermath of such events.
