Muncie, IN (March 6, 2025) – A Muncie man sustained serious injuries after his truck collided with a train on Wednesday morning, according to the Muncie Police Department.

Authorities report that the crash occurred at approximately 10:14 a.m. at the railroad crossing near S. Monroe St and E. Kirby Ave. Emergency responders, including police and paramedics, arrived at the scene and found the driver partially ejected from his full-size truck.

Medical personnel provided immediate care before transporting the injured man to a nearby hospital for further treatment. His current condition has not been released.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver was traveling south on Monroe St when he attempted to bypass the railroad crossing gates, which were already lowered. Witnesses reported that as the truck moved around the barriers, an eastbound train struck the vehicle.

The Muncie Police Department is continuing to investigate the incident. Additional details may be released as authorities work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the crash.

Our thoughts are with the injured man, and we hope for his full recovery.

Train and Vehicle Collisions in Indiana

Collisions between trains and motor vehicles are among the most dangerous types of crashes due to the sheer size and force of a moving train. Railroad crossings are designed with gates and signals to prevent accidents, but incidents still occur when drivers attempt to bypass safety barriers.

According to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), Indiana ranks among the top states for train-related collisions, with dozens of accidents occurring at crossings each year. Many of these incidents result in severe injuries or fatalities.

To prevent these tragic accidents, drivers must always obey crossing signals and never attempt to drive around lowered gates. Trains can take a mile or more to come to a complete stop, making it nearly impossible to avoid a collision once a vehicle is on the tracks.
