Mosheim, TN (September 18, 2024) – A two-vehicle crash occurred on Tuesday evening around 8 p.m. at the intersection of West Andrew Johnson Highway and Dulaney Road, resulting in injuries to three individuals. Upon arrival, Mosheim police discovered a car in a ditch with a man trapped behind the steering wheel and a woman outside the vehicle, according to Officer Dustin Lawson’s report.
A second vehicle, a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado, came to rest in the roadway at the intersection. First responders worked quickly to free the man from the car, while Mosheim police assisted Greene County-Greeneville EMS in transporting all three individuals involved in the crash to Johnson City Medical Center for medical evaluation and treatment.
The driver of the 2003 Pontiac sedan was identified as 30-year-old Jose V. Ortega, with 22-year-old Merari E. Reyes Dimas as his passenger. Both suffered suspected minor injuries. The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado, identified as 45-year-old Jerry E. Sheline, also sustained suspected “non-incapacitating” injuries and was taken to the same medical facility.
According to statements made to the police, Ortega and Dimas were traveling eastbound on West Andrew Johnson Highway when the pickup truck pulled out in front of them. Ortega attempted to avoid a collision, resulting in their vehicle ending up in the ditch with severe damage. Sheline reported that he was turning left from West Andrew Johnson Highway onto Dulaney Road when he saw headlights in the distance and entered the roadway, which led to the crash. The police report indicated that Sheline’s actions included a “failure to yield right of way.”
Fortunately, all occupants of both vehicles were wearing safety restraints at the time of the accident, which likely contributed to minimizing the severity of their injuries.
Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this incident, especially those who sustained injuries during the crash.
