Morrow County, OH (February 4, 2025) – A young police officer from Richland County lost her life in a tragic crash early Monday morning on U.S. 42, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP).

Authorities say the crash occurred at approximately 5:32 a.m. when 20-year-old Summer Kennard of Cardington was driving a Toyota RAV4 eastbound on U.S. 42. OSHP reports that Kennard’s vehicle veered off the right side of the roadway and, as she attempted to correct her path, she crossed left of center. Her vehicle was then struck by a westbound Ford F-150.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene and transported Kennard to Morrow County Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the Ford sustained minor injuries and was also taken to the hospital for treatment.

Kennard served as a part-time officer for both the Bellville and Butler Police Departments in Richland County. The law enforcement community mourns her loss, with Butler Police Chief Eric Winbigler sharing that she “will be missed beyond words” and that her impact on the community “will be remembered for years.” The Bellville Police Department also expressed “great sadness” in a statement on social media.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash.

Our deepest condolences go out to Kennard’s family, friends, and fellow officers during this difficult time.

Dangers of Overcorrection in Ohio

Overcorrection is a common factor in serious crashes, particularly on rural highways like U.S. 42. When a driver unintentionally leaves the roadway, sudden steering adjustments can cause the vehicle to cross into oncoming traffic, increasing the risk of severe or fatal collisions.

Ohio’s highways and rural roads often have narrow shoulders, making it critical for drivers to remain calm and gradually regain control if they drift off course. Defensive driving techniques, such as reducing speed and easing back onto the road carefully, can help prevent overcorrection-related accidents.

This devastating incident is a reminder of the risks drivers face daily. It also highlights the incredible dedication of law enforcement officers who serve their communities. For those affected by a tragic loss or injury in a crash, seeking guidance from legal and medical professionals can provide critical support during the recovery process.

If you or a loved one has been impacted by a serious accident, speaking with professionals who understand Ohio’s traffic laws and legal resources can help you navigate this challenging time.
