Montgomery, AL (February 27, 2025) – A police pursuit that began in Autauga County ended in a serious crash on U.S. 231 in Montgomery, leaving two people injured Wednesday afternoon, according to authorities.

The pursuit started around 4:19 p.m. when troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division assisted the Prattville Police Department in attempting to stop a Toyota Camry on Interstate 65 near mile marker 183. The driver fled from officers, crossing into the northbound lanes of I-65 while traveling southbound and striking another vehicle in a hit-and-run.

Law enforcement continued the pursuit through Montgomery until the Toyota crashed into a commercial motor vehicle on U.S. 231 near mile marker 164. The impact left both the driver and a passenger in the Toyota injured.

The driver was transported to Baptist Medical Center South for treatment, while the passenger sustained more severe injuries and was airlifted to the University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital. Authorities have not released their identities or current conditions.

Multiple agencies, including ALEA’s Highway Patrol and Marine Patrol Divisions, the State Bureau of Investigation, Montgomery Police, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, and the Prattville Police Department, assisted in the pursuit and crash response. The investigation remains ongoing.

Police Pursuits and Crash Risks in Alabama

High-speed police chases present serious risks to both those involved and the surrounding public. While law enforcement agencies have protocols for determining when to continue or terminate a pursuit, suspects fleeing at high speeds can pose significant dangers to other motorists.

In this case, the pursuit led to a hit-and-run incident and ultimately a collision with a commercial vehicle. These types of crashes can result in severe injuries due to the force of impact, particularly when high speeds and large vehicles are involved.

Victims of crashes caused by reckless driving during police pursuits may have legal options to seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages. If you or a loved one has been involved in a serious crash, consulting with a legal professional can help clarify the next steps. Support is available for those navigating the aftermath of a traumatic accident.
