Monroe County, MI (October 16, 2024) – A tragic head-on collision occurred Tuesday morning at approximately 8:30 a.m. on S. Custer Road, east of Lewis Avenue in Raisinville Township. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office reported that the accident resulted in the deaths of a 19-year-old woman and an infant.
According to the investigation, Journee E. Padgett, 19, of Jackson, was driving eastbound on S. Custer Road in a 2015 Chevrolet Malibu, with an infant secured in a rear-facing car seat as a passenger. For reasons that remain unclear, Padgett crossed the centerline into oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with a 2021 Western Star semi-truck traveling in the westbound lane.
Following the impact, both vehicles came to a stop in the westbound lane. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, where Padgett was pronounced dead. The infant was transported to a local hospital but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival. The driver of the semi-truck was unharmed in the incident.
Authorities confirmed that both Padgett and the infant were properly secured—Padgett was wearing her seatbelt, and the baby was in a rear-facing car seat at the time of the crash. The semi-truck driver was also wearing a seatbelt. Investigators have stated that speed and alcohol were not contributing factors in this tragic accident.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is ongoing, and officials are working to determine the exact reasons for Padgett’s crossing into the opposite lane.
