Moline, IL (March 5, 2025) – Two Moline High School students were hospitalized after being struck by a car near the school on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Moline Police Department, the accident occurred around 3:15 p.m. at the intersection of 36th St and Avenue of the Cities. Reports indicate that a group of students had gathered near the traffic light at the southeast corner of the intersection. When the traffic light turned green for vehicles traveling on Avenue of the Cities, several students attempted to run north across the crosswalk.

At the same time, traffic was stopped in the south lane as vehicles waited to turn left onto the school campus. As the students ran past the stopped vehicles, a 2010 Nissan traveling west in the northernmost lane struck two teens, a 15-year-old and a 17-year-old. Both victims sustained injuries and were transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Police have not released further details regarding their conditions. The incident remains under investigation.

Our thoughts go to the victims as we hope for their recovery.

Pedestrian Safety and Traffic Awareness in Illinois

Pedestrian accidents are particularly concerning near schools, where students frequently cross busy intersections. In areas like Avenue of the Cities, high traffic volume and turning vehicles can create dangerous conditions, especially when pedestrians attempt to cross outside designated signals.

Traffic safety experts emphasize the importance of crossing at designated times, ensuring visibility, and being aware of vehicle movement before stepping into the roadway. Similarly, drivers are reminded to remain vigilant, especially in school zones, where unexpected pedestrian movement is common.

When a pedestrian is injured in a crash, recovery can involve medical expenses, rehabilitation, and emotional distress. Understanding legal rights and seeking the necessary support can help victims and their families navigate the challenges following an accident.

If you or a loved one has been injured in a pedestrian accident, knowing your options for recovery is essential.
