Modesto, CA (November 26, 2024) – A 22-year-old man has been arrested on charges of DUI, hit-and-run, and vehicular manslaughter after a deadly pedestrian accident in Modesto on Saturday night. The crash occurred around 9:12 p.m. on South 9th Street, just north of Hatch Road, when the man, later identified as Jasneal Hayer, struck a pedestrian and attempted to flee the scene.
First responders arrived to find the victim, a male pedestrian, lying in the roadway, unresponsive. Despite the immediate efforts of emergency personnel, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. As California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers responded to the crash, they spotted a 2020 Mercedes sedan parked nearby with visible front-end damage. Moments later, the driver, later identified as Hayer, attempted to drive away, heading southbound on Highway 99.
Officers quickly pulled him over and discovered that Hayer was driving under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested at the scene and is now facing charges of DUI, hit-and-run, and vehicular manslaughter. Hayer is currently being held at the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center.
