Mississippi County, AR (January 14, 2025) – A tragic multi-vehicle crash claimed the lives of two individuals and injured two children on State Highway 18 near Big Lake.

The Arkansas State Police reported that the collision occurred at approximately 5:25 p.m. on January 12. Keeley Wheeler, 72, of Blytheville, was driving a 2024 GMC Yukon SUV when the vehicle veered left, crossing the center turn lane and triggering the devastating chain of events.

Patricia Edge, 37, of Leachville, who was driving a 2014 Nissan Pathfinder SUV, attempted to avoid Wheeler’s vehicle by veering to the right but unfortunately struck a 2005 Ford Ranger truck in the process. The truck, driven by an unidentified individual, veered off the right side of the roadway due to the impact. Following the initial collision, Wheeler’s SUV collided head-on with Edge’s Pathfinder, causing both vehicles to come to an abrupt stop.

Emergency responders were quick to the scene, providing care to the injured victims. Despite their efforts, both Edge and Wheeler succumbed to their injuries sustained in the crash. Additionally, two children who were passengers in the vehicles sustained injuries and were transported to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis for treatment. Their conditions remain unknown at this time.

The accident remains under investigation by the Arkansas State Police, as authorities work to determine the circumstances that led to the collision. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this difficult time.

Multi-Vehicle Collisions in Arkansas

Arkansas roads see a variety of accidents, with multi-vehicle collisions being among the most severe. These crashes often result in significant injuries or fatalities due to the complexity of multiple impacts. Factors contributing to such accidents can include driver error, adverse weather conditions, or mechanical failures.

State Highway 18, like many rural roads, can present challenges for drivers, including limited visibility, high-speed travel, and fewer opportunities for evasive action. Residents of Arkansas are urged to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to reduce the risk of such tragedies.

Legal recourse is often available for victims or their families to address the aftermath of a crash. Holding the responsible party accountable is a critical step in the recovery process. Navigating insurance claims and seeking compensation for injuries, loss of income, and emotional suffering can be challenging without professional guidance.

For families facing the devastating consequences of fatal crashes, support is essential. Community resources, legal assistance, and counseling services can play a vital role in helping individuals navigate these hardships.
