Minneapolis, MN (January 26, 2025) – A tragic head-on collision occurred on northbound Interstate 35W near Johnson St in Minneapolis, resulting in one fatality and leaving another individual with non-life-threatening injuries. The accident involved a southbound 2025 Chevrolet Malibu traveling in the northbound lanes and a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Reports indicate that the driver of the Chevy Malibu, identified as 21-year-old Aman Mukhtar Mohamed of Crystal, MN, was traveling in the wrong direction in the left lane. The Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by 25-year-old Cassidy Lee Groe of Lino Lakes, MN, attempted to avoid the Malibu by moving to the center lane. Unfortunately, the Malibu also moved into the center lane, leading to a catastrophic head-on collision. Both vehicles came to a stop in the right lane after the impact.
Emergency responders, including the Minneapolis Fire Department, Hennepin County Medical Examiner, and HCMC medical teams, arrived promptly at the scene. Despite their efforts, Mohamed succumbed to his injuries. Groe was transported to HCMC with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities confirmed that alcohol was a factor for the driver of the Chevrolet Malibu, while the Jeep’s driver was not impaired.
The collision remains under investigation as officials work to gather additional details. Traffic on I-35W was temporarily rerouted as crews worked to clear the scene and investigate the crash.
Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Aman Mukhtar Mohamed during this difficult time, and we wish Cassidy Lee Groe a swift recovery.
