Middletown Twp, PA (January 28, 2025) – A tragic accident on Interstate 295 Eastbound claimed the life of a 25-year-old woman and left a man with serious injuries, Pennsylvania State Police reported. The collision occurred Sunday evening at approximately 8:52 p.m. near mile marker 5.7 of I-295 Eastbound.
Samantha Kaitlin Cote, of High Bridge, New Jersey, was driving a 2007 Toyota Matrix on the ramp from US-1 Southbound to I-295 Eastbound when her vehicle hit a patch of ice. She lost control of her car, which veered right, then left, striking a metal guide rail before spinning into the travel lanes. A 2020 Volkswagen Jetta, driven by Ryan Murray of Washington Crossing, collided with her vehicle.
Cote’s car eventually came to rest on the shoulder, while Murray’s vehicle remained in the right lane. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. Despite the safety measures, Cote sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at Saint Mary’s Medical Center by Dr. Kaye. Murray was transported to the same hospital with suspected serious injuries.
According to authorities, Cote’s vehicle sustained significant front-end damage, and no airbags deployed. The icy road conditions are believed to have played a critical role in the crash. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
Our condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Samantha Cote, and we hope for Ryan Murray’s full recovery.
Winter Driving Safety in Pennsylvania
Accidents like the one on I-295 Eastbound emphasize the dangers of driving in winter weather conditions. Ice and snow can drastically reduce traction, making it easier for drivers to lose control, particularly on ramps or curves. Proper precautions, such as slowing down, maintaining a greater following distance, and equipping vehicles with appropriate tires, can significantly reduce the likelihood of such crashes.
Pennsylvania’s roads can become particularly treacherous during the winter months, and the state often reminds motorists to remain vigilant. Drivers should avoid sudden movements, such as sharp turns or abrupt braking, when navigating icy patches. Additionally, ensuring vehicles are properly maintained for winter weather can save lives.
