Miami-Dade, FL (December 26, 2024) – A serious motorcycle crash on U.S. 1 near mile marker 124 prompted an air rescue and temporarily blocked both northbound and southbound lanes on Thursday. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to the scene following reports of a motorcyclist down in the southbound lanes.
Emergency crews confirmed that an adult trauma patient was airlifted to Jackson South Medical Center for treatment. The extent of the motorcyclist’s injuries remains unknown at this time. Authorities used the highway as a landing zone for the rescue helicopter, causing a temporary shutdown of an 18-mile stretch between mile markers 123 and 125.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office later confirmed that the lanes had been reopened, though the cause of the crash is still under investigation. Traffic cameras captured footage of the helicopter’s arrival and departure as drivers waited in stopped traffic.
Our thoughts are with the injured individual, and we hope for a full recovery.
Motorcycle Crashes in Florida
Florida consistently ranks among the states with the highest number of motorcycle crashes. High-speed highways like U.S. 1, combined with dense traffic and visibility challenges, create conditions where motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable.
According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), there were over 8,000 motorcycle crashes in the state in 2023, many resulting in severe injuries or fatalities. These incidents underscore the importance of heightened caution for both motorcyclists and other drivers.
Motorcyclists can improve safety by wearing appropriate gear, including helmets, and by remaining vigilant on busy roadways. Drivers are reminded to check blind spots and give motorcyclists ample space to maneuver.
