Merkel, TX (October 29, 2024) – A tragic car accident occurred on Interstate 20 early this morning, resulting in the death of a Texas Department of Criminal Justice officer. At approximately 7 a.m., 44-year-old Joshua Williams was driving eastbound when he lost control of his vehicle, striking a guardrail on the passenger side.
According to the Merkel Police Department, after hitting the guardrail, Williams overcorrected, causing the vehicle to roll over multiple times. Unfortunately, he was ejected from the vehicle during the rollover. Reports indicate that Williams was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, which contributed to the severity of his injuries. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
A second passenger, 43-year-old Chad Lawson, was also in the vehicle. Fortunately, Lawson was wearing his seatbelt during the incident and was treated for his injuries.
Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and colleagues of Officer Williams during this difficult time.
