Melbourne, FL (October 27, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred just after midnight on I-95 South, resulting in the death of a 19-year-old woman from Melbourne. The incident took place near mile marker 188, approaching Pineda Causeway, and involved multiple vehicles.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the crash was initiated when a 2010 Lexus ES350 sedan was observed speeding and weaving through traffic. The Lexus collided with the rear of a semi-truck in the outside lane, causing it to come to a stop partially in the outside lane and on the outside shoulder. The semi-truck managed to stop on the outside shoulder as well.
After the initial crash, the 19-year-old woman exited her vehicle. In an attempt to avoid the Lexus, the driver of a Ford pickup truck, traveling in the outside southbound lane, swerved left but struck the rear of the Lexus. This collision caused the Lexus to hit its driver, who was standing outside the vehicle. Tragically, she was thrown into the inside lane by the impact and was subsequently struck by a Toyota Camry.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but the young woman was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of her injuries. A 16-year-old boy who was a passenger in the Lexus was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Two other passengers in the Lexus were unharmed and remained at the scene to provide information to authorities.
The drivers of the tractor-trailer, pickup truck, and Toyota Camry were not injured and also remained on the scene to assist with the investigation.
