Mead, WA (October 28, 2024) – On Monday a serious accident occurred on SR-206 at Peone Road, resulting in the full closure of both directions of the roadway. The incident took place when a Ford Ranger collided with the back of a Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) vehicle, injuring a DOT worker who was on the scene.
According to Sergeant Greg Riddell from the Washington State Patrol, the DOT worker was engaged in the removal of two deceased deer from the roadway when the accident happened. The impact of the collision pinned the worker between the two vehicles. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, and the injured worker was life-flighted to Sacred Heart Medical Center, where he is being treated for what has been described as “life-altering” injuries.
The driver of the Ford Ranger also sustained injuries during the incident, having reportedly slammed into the windshield upon impact. This individual was transported to the hospital by ambulance for further evaluation and treatment.
Initial investigations suggest that the driver of the Ford Ranger may have been distracted at the time of the collision, as they did not slow down or change lanes when approaching the WSDOT vehicle. Detectives from the Major Accident team are currently on-site conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
As a result of the accident, both directions of SR-206 remain closed, and authorities expect the closures to last at least through noon while they continue their investigation and clear the scene.
Our thoughts are with the injured worker and their family during this challenging time.
