McDonald County, MO (September 27, 2024) – A motorcycle accident occurred on Thursday afternoon, resulting in injuries to two individuals. At approximately 1:20 p.m., the Missouri State Patrol responded to a collision involving two motorcycles and a farm tractor on MO-90, located three miles west of Jane.

According to the preliminary investigation, a 2024 Suzuki motorcycle, driven by 70-year-old Gary J. Bibeau from Wyoming, Minnesota, and a 2014 Honda motorcycle, operated by 40-year-old Kelly E. Sobon from Becker, Minnesota, both attempted to pass a Case farm tractor as it was making a left turn. This maneuver led to a collision between the two motorcycles, causing Sobon’s motorcycle to strike the tractor.

Emergency responders arrived promptly at the scene, where they provided medical assistance to the injured parties. Sobon sustained moderate injuries and was transported to Freeman Hospital in Joplin for further evaluation and treatment. Bibeau, who suffered minor injuries, was also taken to Freeman Hospital for medical care.

Motorcycle Accidents in Missouri

Motorcycle accidents are a significant concern in Missouri, with many riders facing serious risks on the road. According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, motorcycle riders are particularly vulnerable due to their lack of protection compared to other vehicles. In 2023 alone, there were over 1,800 motorcycle crashes reported in the state, resulting in numerous injuries and fatalities.

Common causes of motorcycle accidents include: Inattentive Drivers: Many accidents occur when drivers fail to see motorcycles, especially at intersections. Speeding: Excessive speed can reduce a rider’s ability to react to sudden obstacles or changes in traffic. Poor Weather Conditions: Rain, snow, and ice can create hazardous riding conditions, increasing the likelihood of accidents.

Lane Splitting: While legal in some states, lane splitting can be dangerous and is not permitted in Missouri.

Being involved in a motorcycle accident can be a traumatic experience, leading to physical injuries, emotional distress, and financial burdens. If you or a loved one has been injured in a motorcycle accident, it is essential to seek legal counsel to understand your rights and options for recovery.
