McCook, NE (October 3, 2024) – A traffic accident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, October 2 involving a Ford Explorer and a semi-truck on Highway 83, just north of McCook and near the Work Ethic Camp. Multiple calls to McCook dispatch reported the incident, prompting a response from the Red Willow County Sheriff’s Office and the McCook Police Department for traffic control.
The accident transpired when the driver of the northbound Ford Explorer noticed a tire warning light and briefly pulled over to assess the situation. After deciding to check the issue, the driver attempted a U-turn from the right shoulder, unaware of an approaching semi-truck traveling in the same direction behind her. Despite the semi-truck driver’s efforts to lock the brakes and swerve left, the vehicle could not avoid the collision, which occurred just inside the southbound lane.
The impact resulted in significant damage to both vehicles. The front of the Ford Explorer struck the passenger side of the semi, causing damage to its front axle and fuel tank. The rear of the Ford then collided with the side of the semi, leading to the vehicle sliding before coming to a stop. Fortunately, both drivers were wearing seat belts, which likely prevented more severe injuries.
While the driver of the semi was unharmed, the driver of the Ford Explorer was transported to McCook Community Hospital for further evaluation, although her condition remains uncertain. McCook Ambulance responded promptly to the scene, and evidence collected, including skid marks and video footage from the semi, supported the accounts provided by both drivers.
Traffic on Highway 83 was rerouted for several hours as a tow service worked to remove the damaged semi-truck from the roadway. Sheriff Darling expressed gratitude for the quick assistance from personnel at the Work Ethic Camp, the McCook Police Department, and McCook Ambulance.
In his statement, Sheriff Darling emphasized the importance of caution when encountering emergency vehicles at accident scenes. He urged drivers to prioritize the safety of those on site, stating, “Pay attention to the safety of everyone on site. What you are doing at that moment is not as important as the safety of those trying to serve others.” He encouraged the public to avoid distractions and to follow directions from emergency personnel.
