May City, IA (October 31, 2024) – A serious accident occurred on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, involving a semi-truck and a passenger vehicle near May City. The incident took place at approximately 7:05 a.m. when emergency responders were called to the scene on Tyler Avenue, located two and a half miles northwest of May City.
According to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, 74-year-old Darwin Van Maasdam of Ocheyedan was driving a 2013 Peterbilt semi-truck southbound on Tyler Avenue. At the same time, 43-year-old Jaqueline Barrios Cuadros, also from Ocheyedan, was traveling northbound in a 2018 Toyota. Due to heavy fog conditions, Van Maasdam was driving at a reduced speed of around 35 mph when he noticed a vehicle in the southbound lane. Unfortunately, he was unable to maneuver out of the way in time, resulting in a collision with Barrios Cuadros’s vehicle, which had just exited a driveway.
The Toyota was occupied by Barrios Cuadros and four passengers. Following the crash, two individuals were transported to Osceola Community Hospital by the Sibley Ambulance, while three others were taken to Sanford Sheldon Hospital by the Ocheyedan Ambulance for further medical evaluation and treatment. The extent of the injuries sustained by the occupants has not been disclosed, and the incident remains under investigation.
