Mason County, MI (February 20, 2025) – A tragic two-vehicle crash in front of Mason County Eastern High School on Wednesday claimed the life of a student and left another injured, according to the Mason County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO).
Deputies were dispatched to the crash just before noon on Custer Road, where the school’s resource officer and a local firefighter were among the first responders. Authorities found one student trapped inside a vehicle and attempted life-saving measures, but the young driver was later pronounced dead at Corewell Hospital in Ludington.
A second student sustained injuries in the crash, though their condition has not been publicly released. Following the tragedy, Mason County Eastern Schools canceled Wednesday night’s varsity girls’ basketball game and made counseling services available to students and staff.
“As a father of young drivers, my heart breaks for the family of the young life lost,” Sheriff Kim Cole said. “And, as the sheriff, I join our community in mourning for the MCE family.”
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the MCSO’s Traffic Crash Reconstruction Team. Anyone with additional information is urged to contact authorities.
