Mason County, MI (November 21, 2024) – A tragic accident on US-31 resulted in the death of a 35-year-old Pentwater woman, identified as Latoya Smith, and injuries to multiple individuals on Wednesday. The crash occurred as Smith and another good Samaritan stopped on the southbound shoulder of the freeway to assist a driver who had spun out and ended up in the median.

The Mason County Sheriff’s Office reported that a third vehicle, a pickup truck driven by a 37-year-old Shelby man, lost control on the wet and slippery roadway. The truck entered the median, striking the two good Samaritans as well as the disabled vehicle they were checking on.

Smith succumbed to her injuries at the scene, while the other pedestrian, the occupants of the disabled car, and the pickup truck driver all sustained injuries and were transported to Corewell Hospital for treatment. Their conditions and identities have not been disclosed.

The Michigan State Police, Oceana County Sheriff’s Office, PM Fire, and Ludington Jaws of Life responded to the scene to assist with rescue efforts and secure the area. The accident remains under investigation by the Mason County Sheriff’s Office.

Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Latoya Smith during this heartbreaking time. We also wish a swift recovery to those injured.

Pedestrian Accidents in Michigan

Pedestrian accidents involving vehicles are a significant concern in Michigan, particularly during adverse weather conditions. Wet or icy roads, like those reported in this US-31 collision, often contribute to loss of control and tragic outcomes. Stopping to assist others on highways, while commendable, can place individuals at risk due to the unpredictability of traffic and road conditions.

Drivers are reminded to reduce speeds and exercise caution in hazardous weather. Similarly, motorists should use hazard lights and safely position their vehicles if stopping along a freeway is necessary. These precautions can prevent accidents like the devastating collision in Mason County.

For families affected by fatal pedestrian accidents, the emotional and financial toll can be overwhelming. Access to legal support and resources is critical to navigating the aftermath of such tragedies.
