Mason County, MI (November 21, 2024) – A tragic accident on US-31 resulted in the death of a 35-year-old Pentwater woman, identified as Latoya Smith, and injuries to multiple individuals on Wednesday. The crash occurred as Smith and another good Samaritan stopped on the southbound shoulder of the freeway to assist a driver who had spun out and ended up in the median.
The Mason County Sheriff’s Office reported that a third vehicle, a pickup truck driven by a 37-year-old Shelby man, lost control on the wet and slippery roadway. The truck entered the median, striking the two good Samaritans as well as the disabled vehicle they were checking on.
Smith succumbed to her injuries at the scene, while the other pedestrian, the occupants of the disabled car, and the pickup truck driver all sustained injuries and were transported to Corewell Hospital for treatment. Their conditions and identities have not been disclosed.
The Michigan State Police, Oceana County Sheriff’s Office, PM Fire, and Ludington Jaws of Life responded to the scene to assist with rescue efforts and secure the area. The accident remains under investigation by the Mason County Sheriff’s Office.
