Maryville, MO (October 7, 2024) – A significant traffic accident occurred on October 6, 2024, at approximately 11:35 AM on US 71, just one mile north of Maryville. Emergency responders from Nodaway County were called to the scene following reports of a collision involving two vehicles.
Preliminary reports indicate that a 2012 Ford Explorer, driven by 87-year-old Doris L. Hagey from Burlington Junction, MO, was traveling southbound on US 71 when it attempted to turn into the parking lot of Gray’s Truck Stop. At the same time, a 2010 Chevrolet HHR, operated by 57-year-old Jered M. Smith from Maryville, MO, was traveling northbound on the same highway. Unfortunately, the Ford Explorer entered the path of the Chevrolet HHR, leading to a collision where the front end of the HHR struck the right front end of the Explorer.
Following the impact, the Ford Explorer came to rest in the northbound lanes of US 71, facing west, while the Chevrolet HHR ended up in the entryway of Gray’s Truck Stop, facing northwest. Both vehicles sustained total damage and were subsequently towed from the scene by local towing services.
Injuries were reported as a result of the accident. Jered M. Smith and his 27-year-old passenger, Levi S. Smith, both sustained serious injuries and were transported by Nodaway County EMS to Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, MO for medical treatment. Doris L. Hagey also suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the same medical facility for evaluation and care. The incident remains under investigation by local authorities.
