Martinez, CA (February 3, 2025) – A fire broke out at the Martinez Refinery Company on Saturday afternoon, leaving at least six people injured and prompting a temporary shelter-in-place order for portions of Martinez, according to Contra Costa Health Services.

Emergency crews responded to the scene around 1:45 p.m. and worked to contain the fire within the refinery. Officials advised residents to stay indoors, close windows and doors, and turn off heaters, air conditioners, and fans as a precautionary measure. The shelter-in-place order has since been lifted.

Of the six people injured, two were treated at the scene and released, while four others were transported to local hospitals. Three of the hospitalized individuals have since been released, while one remains under observation. Authorities have not confirmed whether the injured individuals were refinery employees or nearby residents.

Traffic disruptions have been reported in the area, with Con Fire confirming road closures. The California Highway Patrol has shut down Marina Vista on- and off-ramps to Interstate 680 in both directions, along with Pacheco Boulevard between I-680 and Howe Road. Officials have not provided an estimated reopening time.

Inspectors are currently at the site, and an incident report will be available once the response is completed.

Our thoughts are with those affected by this incident, and we wish the injured a full recovery.

Industrial Fires and Safety in California

Refinery and industrial fires pose significant risks to both workers and nearby residents. Incidents like the Martinez Refinery fire can lead to serious injuries, environmental concerns, and temporary displacement for surrounding communities.

California refineries follow strict safety regulations to prevent such incidents, but fires can still occur due to equipment malfunctions, hazardous material exposure, or other unforeseen factors. In some cases, these fires can lead to air quality concerns, prompting health advisories and evacuation orders.

For individuals affected by industrial accidents, seeking immediate medical care is essential. Additionally, understanding legal rights and available resources can help those impacted by injuries, lost wages, or displacement recover more effectively.
