Marshall Township, PA (October 7, 2024) – A serious motor vehicle accident occurred on Sunday, October 6, at approximately 2:52 p.m. on the eastbound side of Interstate 76 at mile marker 29.6 in Allegheny County. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene following reports of entrapment.
Initial reports indicated that Stations 21 and 51 were the first responders to arrive. Shortly after their arrival, Allegheny County requested the assistance of Station 51 Fire Police at 3:02 p.m. The situation escalated, prompting C-21-3 to announce that a helicopter would be landing on the Turnpike at 3:08 p.m. to assist with the emergency response.
As the incident unfolded, C-21-3 requested that his station be re-alerted for Fire Police due to a lack of response at 3:15 p.m. By 3:18 p.m., he also requested that Cranberry Police Department close all traffic entering the Turnpike at Cranberry Exit 28 to facilitate emergency operations.
At 3:20 p.m., Station 21 was instructed to deploy any available resources to close I-76 eastbound, with SQ-21 responding to assist. The helicopter was reported to be overhead by 3:26 p.m., indicating that medical assistance was imminent.
C-21-3 attempted to establish communication on the Allegheny LZ tac channel at 3:27 p.m., but control advised him to switch to Butler Air Ops 1 for better communication. By 3:30 p.m., control confirmed that the pilot was now speaking with an Allegheny Chief on the appropriate channel.
As the response continued, SQ-21 sought confirmation from C-21-3 at 3:37 p.m. regarding the complete closure of I-79 southbound, which he confirmed was still necessary. At 3:51 p.m., C-21-3 reported that LF-1 was preparing to depart, indicating that I-79 SB would soon be reopened. LF-1 took off at 3:52 p.m., and by 3:59 p.m., units from Station 42 were reported as clear from the scene.
At 4:02 p.m., LF-1 landed on the helipad at Allegheny General Hospital (AGH), and by 4:13 p.m., RQ-21 was back in service, concluding the emergency response.
