Marion Twp, MN (November 22, 2024) – A severe accident involving two vehicles occurred on Highway 14 near Mile Marker 217 in Marion Township, Olmsted County, during the evening hours on Wednesday. Emergency responders, including Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office, Rochester Fire, and Mayo Ambulance, arrived promptly at the scene to assist the victims.

The collision involved a westbound 2017 GMC Yukon and an eastbound 2011 Nissan Murano. The crash occurred around 6:01 p.m. under hazardous road conditions of snow and ice, contributing to the severity of the incident. All airbags deployed in both vehicles, and seat belts were reportedly in use by all occupants.

The driver of the Nissan Murano, identified as Kevin Douangmychit, 36, of Rochester, sustained life-threatening injuries. He was transported to St. Marys Mayo Clinic for emergency care.

The GMC Yukon was driven by Colleen Jennifer Ronningen, 43, also of Rochester. She suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to St. Marys Mayo Clinic for treatment. Two juvenile passengers, both females aged 12 and 8, were also in the Yukon. The 12-year-old sustained non-life-threatening injuries, while the 8-year-old suffered life-threatening injuries. Both were taken to St. Marys Mayo Clinic.

Local authorities continue their investigation into the crash. No alcohol was involved, and all parties were wearing seat belts. The road conditions at the time of the incident—snow and ice—are believed to have been significant factors.

Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families during this challenging time.

Car Accidents in Minnesota

Car accidents in Minnesota can become particularly dangerous during the winter months, as snow and icy road conditions create significant hazards for drivers. Highways, such as Highway 14, are often more prone to accidents when weather conditions deteriorate, reducing visibility and traction.

In this incident, the combination of snowy and icy roadways and potential speed may have contributed to the crash. Authorities often remind drivers to reduce speed, maintain a safe following distance, and ensure their vehicles are prepared for winter driving conditions to minimize risks.

Local emergency services, including Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office and Rochester Fire, play a crucial role in responding to accidents of this nature. Their swift action can help stabilize the injured and prevent further complications.
