Marion County, OR (February 13, 2025) – A 72-year-old man from Idanha was killed in a head-on crash on Highway 22 Tuesday afternoon, according to Oregon State Police. The fatal collision occurred near milepost 40 between Gates and Detroit.
Authorities reported that Phillip Craig Tramontana was driving a blue Ford Ranger westbound on Highway 22 when he attempted to pass several vehicles in the eastbound lane. While doing so, a Subaru Outback driven by a 20-year-old Utah man approached in the same lane.
Both drivers attempted to avoid a collision by swerving into a gravel area on the side of the highway, but the vehicles still collided head-on.
Tragically, Tramontana was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Subaru was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash resulted in the closure of Highway 22 for approximately two hours as investigators examined the scene and crews worked to clear the roadway. The Oregon State Police are continuing their investigation into the accident.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the victim during this difficult time.
Head-On Collisions in Oregon
