Manteca, CA (September 22, 2024) – A tragic multi-vehicle collision occurred on Saturday, September 21, 2024, just before 1 p.m. on Highway 132, west of Modesto. The incident resulted in the death of a 26-year-old man from Ceres, while an 11-month-old child was airlifted to a hospital with major injuries. Four other individuals sustained minor injuries in the crash.
Preliminary investigations by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) revealed that the driver of a Honda sedan was traveling eastbound on Highway 132 when, for reasons still under investigation, he partially crossed over the double yellow lines. This action led to a sideswipe collision with a Honda SUV. The impact caused the SUV to then strike a Toyota sedan head-on. In an attempt to avoid the collision, another driver applied their brakes but was subsequently rear-ended by a fifth vehicle.
The 11-month-old child in the Toyota was airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center for treatment of major injuries. Fortunately, the other individuals involved in the crash reported only minor injuries.
Highway 132 was closed for several hours as emergency responders worked at the scene, with the roadway reopening at approximately 3:10 p.m. The investigation is ongoing, and it remains unclear whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.
