Manchester, NH (February 7, 2025) – A devastating camper fire near a home at 1670 Brown Avenue in Manchester claimed the lives of two individuals and left another person injured on Thursday evening. The fire was reported just before 8 p.m., according to Manchester Fire officials.
Manchester Fire Engine 9, located less than a mile from the scene, arrived within two minutes to find the camper fully engulfed in flames with reports of two people trapped inside. Firefighters quickly deployed hose lines to knock down the fire and used power tools to force entry into the trailer. Despite their efforts, the two individuals—a man and a woman—were found in the bedroom area of the RV and pronounced dead at the scene.
The victims’ identities have not yet been released. Their bodies will be transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for autopsies to confirm their identities and determine the cause and manner of death, according to New Hampshire Fire Marshal Sean Toomey and Manchester Fire Department Chief Ryan Cashin.
A third person sustained burns to his hands while attempting to extinguish the fire. Emergency medical crews assessed him at the scene, and he was later transported to the hospital by a family member for further treatment, according to MFD Battalion Chief Ken Proulx.
Witnesses reported hearing explosions, believed to be from propane tanks inside the camper, followed by heavy fire. The intensity of the flames made it impossible for bystanders to approach the trailer to assist in rescue efforts. Fortunately, the fire did not spread to the adjacent home, but Brown Avenue was temporarily closed as firefighters worked to fully extinguish the blaze.
The New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office, along with Manchester Fire Marshals and Manchester Police, is conducting a joint investigation to determine the cause of the fire. No further information has been released at this time.
Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to the families and loved ones of the victims. We also wish a swift recovery to the individual injured in this tragic event.
Fire Safety and RV Accidents in New Hampshire
Fires involving recreational vehicles (RVs) can be particularly dangerous due to the presence of flammable materials and propane tanks, as seen in the tragic incident on Brown Avenue in Manchester. RVs often contain combustible materials, limited escape routes, and can quickly become engulfed in flames, leaving little time for occupants to escape.
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), RV fires are responsible for hundreds of injuries and fatalities each year across the United States. Common causes include electrical malfunctions, propane leaks, cooking accidents, and faulty heating systems. In this case, witnesses reported explosions, likely from propane tanks, which could have contributed to the rapid spread of the fire and the difficulty in performing rescues.
New Hampshire, with its popularity as a destination for camping and outdoor recreation, sees a significant number of RV users. It is crucial for RV owners and users to regularly inspect their vehicles for potential fire hazards, ensure that propane tanks are properly maintained, and have functioning smoke detectors and fire extinguishers on board.
For victims and families affected by fatal fires, the aftermath can be overwhelming. In addition to the emotional trauma, families may face financial burdens related to medical bills, funeral expenses, and property loss. Investigations into the cause of such fires can also be complex, involving multiple agencies to determine whether negligence, equipment failure, or other factors contributed to the incident.
If you or a loved one has been affected by a fire-related accident, it is important to seek legal guidance to understand your rights and potential avenues for compensation.
