Manatee County, FL (January 21, 2025) – A tragic two-vehicle collision on Monday morning claimed the life of a 78-year-old man on US-301 near the intersection with Colony Drive South. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) responded to the crash, which occurred as the man attempted to turn left onto Colony Drive South.

According to FHP, the man was driving a pickup truck southbound in the left-turn lane of US-301. Simultaneously, a Hyundai Sonata, driven by a 23-year-old man, was traveling northbound in the outside lane of the same roadway. The pickup truck turned left into the path of the Sonata, resulting in a devastating collision.

The impact forced the pickup truck onto the paved shoulder of US-301, while the Sonata came to rest on the grassy shoulder. Emergency responders pronounced the driver of the pickup truck dead at the scene. The driver of the Sonata suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

FHP is investigating the circumstances of the crash. Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of the deceased, as well as to the injured individual.

Intersection Accidents in Florida

Intersections, such as the one at US-301 and Colony Drive South, are high-risk locations for traffic collisions, particularly involving left turns. Misjudgments of speed and distance, along with visibility issues, often contribute to these accidents.

Tragically, crashes like this can result in severe outcomes, including fatalities. Florida’s traffic laws emphasize yielding the right of way and exercising caution when making turns to prevent such incidents.
